During the summer of 2020, co-founder Belinda was a penultimate year University student trying to decide her next steps to begin a career in sustainability after graduation. After listening to podcasts featuring sustainability professionals, she came to realise two things:
Having realised the cross-cutting nature of sustainability, she felt empowered by how many options she had in terms of pursuing her interests both now, and in the future as a young person. So, why not empower more young people to learn more about various sustainability topics and careers as well? Over a conversation with her good friend Arwen, who was at the time working as an environmental consultant, the idea for SustainaPod was born. With the pandemic continuing to limit in-person coffee chats, the world of virtual conversations grew, which gave us a good opportunity to leverage on podcasting as a way to connect guests from all over the world with interested youth.
With the kind support of Stephanie Ko, the founder of Green Impact Hub and the Green Impact Hub community, SustainaPod was able to grow our founding team. Paco joined as Head of Operations, and we started to grow our own team from there. Now, we’re a team of over 20 passionate students and changemakers, with multiple departments such as design, content creation and more, helping to bridge the gap between students and sustainability through enlightening conversations and insight from a diverse and educated range of guests.
- Careers in the sustainability field were highly non-linear as people jumped across various sectors and industries
- What she originally thought was just a field focusing on the ‘natural environment’ was very multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary, and segmented into many different topics that intersected different industries.
